Ranking The Royal Outfits At The Queen's Funeral From Worst To First
The late Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on September 19, 2022 was one of the biggest royal events in history. An estimated 4.1 billion people watched the occasion on TV or live. The day saw the royal family following the queen's coffin as it traveled from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey for the funeral, and then from Westminster to Windsor. The service was led by the dean of Westminster.
As is tradition, members of royal family all adhered to a fairly strict dress code for the event. According to Elle, the classic dress code for a State Funeral is all-black, with women traditionally wearing "black knee-length dresses, or coats, black hats, and may also wear face-covering veils."
For the most part, the royal family followed tradition, wearing respectful, simple black outfits along with black hats, or fascinators. However, a few outfits from the funeral stood out thanks to their thoughtful and symbolic touches. Read on to find out our ranking of the best and worst outfits from the queen's State Funeral.
Zara Tindall
Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne and the oldest granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II, wore a subtle but well-chosen outfit. According to Hello! Magazine, she wore a black coat dress from Laura Green London, along with suede heels by Emmy London and classic pearl drop earrings. The most striking part of her outfit was a Juliette Millinery fascinator, which featured a black flower appliqué.
Princess Beatrice
Princess Beatrice, the late queen's granddaughter, brought some modernity to the State Funeral with a black dinner jacket-style blazer by The Kooples paired with a knee-length Louis Vuitton lace dress, known as the Preppy Martingale Dress. She also wore a small round black fascinator to finish off the look (via Hello! Magazine).
Princess Eugenie
Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice's sister, also looked fashionable at her grandmother's funeral. The princess wore a long black coat dress with a collared V-neck and large gold buttons. Her structured wide-brimmed hat and her Gabriela Hearst Diana bag finished off the classic, sophisticated look (via Metro). She opted for simple gold earrings to match with her coat and bag.
Prince Harry
While Prince Harry wore his military uniform to his grandmother's vigil the day before the funeral, he opted for a morning suit comprised of a black jacket and grey pinstripe trousers for the funeral itself. As Page Six reported, Harry was stripped of his military titles when he gave up his position in the Firm. Harry did, however, wear his medals from his time in service. "His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," a spokesperson for Harry told The Independent of his decision to wear a morning suit.
Sophie Wessex
Sophie Wessex, the wife of the late Queen Elizabeth II's youngest son, Prince Edward, looked gorgeous at the State Funeral. She wore a traditional flared black coat dress covered in a delicate embroidered floral pattern. She paired the coat with a dramatic black fascinator with a floral appliqué and black suede pumps.
Prince George
Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William and Princess Catherine, looked all grown up at his great-grandmother's funeral as he walked behind her coffin. As the Liverpool Echo reported, his suit slightly broke with traditional as it was navy rather than black. The young prince did, however, wear a black tie.
Queen Consort Camilla
Queen Camilla's outfit at the late queen's funeral certainly turned heads. She wore a fitted black coat dress that featured embroidered lines on the cast and a round collar. Her striking black fascinator featured a swooping line of leaf appliqués and a netted veil. The most important part of the outfit was her diamond brooch, which, as Harper's Bazaar reported, was likely a gift from the late queen.
Princess Anne
Princess Anne, the late Queen Elizabeth II's only daughter, broke with royal tradition in a wonderful way at her mother's funeral when she became the first royal woman in history to appear at a funeral in military attire. Even though Anne never actively served in the military, she is a patron of the Royal Navy and holds the title of Commodore-in-Chief for Portsmouth, as well as being an honorary Rear Admiral (via Gloucester Live).
Princess Charlotte
The young Princess Charlotte, daughter of Prince William and Princess Catherine, wore a classic outfit to her great-grandmother's funeral that consisted of a sweet pleated wool and velvet black coat dress and a wide-brimmed hat. As the Express noted, the young princess very closely matched her mother. According to People, Charlotte also wore a delicate diamond horseshoe brooch that was given to her by her late great-grandmother as her first real piece of jewelry.
Princess Catherine
Princess Catherine, always applauded for her fashion, didn't disappoint with her chic, simple funeral outfit. The Princess of Wales wore a fitted blazer dress along with a tilted wide-brimmed black hat with a netted veil. According to Elle, she also donned a pearl necklace and pearl earrings that were once worn by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle hasn't always had an easy time in the United Kingdom, but at the late queen's funeral, she struck the perfect balance of modern fashion and traditional elegance. Her chic, minimalist outfit consisted of a flowing Stella McCartney cape dress, along with peal and diamond earrings that were a gift from the late queen. According to the Independent, Meghan had worn a navy version of the same dress to the queen's birthday party in 2018.
